What a Day in May
Our May 2nd Sydney tourney saw 120 players, 24 teams, 103 matches, 123 custom jerseys, a free lunch for 90, many unforgettable buckets, and end-2-end smiles. Welcome to the post tourney edition of your favoruite southern hemisphere sports and startup focused newsletter...maybe the only one in existence, hence why it is your fav!

OUR BEST EVENT YET! 🏀 🙌 🥇
Thanks to all who played in the May 2nd event and made it such a smashing success!
In this newsletter you’ll find links to pictures, video, shout outs to our sponsors, info on the jerseys (including potential reorder), and more info behind the scenes. Also a link to get some feedback on how we can improve. Finally, I’ve detailed the use of Claude to build equal teams to squash the calls for a formal review of the league commissioner (me) since my team made the finals again. 😃 Of course we also have next runs and new ideas.
All our best, Z.
Please take 3 mins and 23 seconds to share your feedback/experience with us if you played/attended!
SHOUT OUT TO OUR INCREDIBLE TOURNEY PARTNERS 🔈️ 💙
This event (as well as past and future events) would not be possible without our wonderful sponsors! We were unsure of our ability to get enough support to cover all the costs of the lunch and the jerseys when we first posted on LinkedIn about this event in March but boy did the community respond to our call for partners with 9 (NINE!) sponsors for this May 2nd Tournament.
Please give them a look and a click below to pay them back for their support. I’ve worked with each of these sponsors in my time in the ecosystem and they are TOP TIER!

OUR TOURNEY WINNERS 🥳
Congrats to Team Runway after beating Team Pitch Deck!

THE WINNERS: TEAM RUNWAY
🤕 INJURIES 🤕
Glad to hear the 3 ankle sprains recovered quickly but unfortunately there was one more significant injury by Morgan McCarthy….give him a LinkedIn connection, follow, or even recommendation to help him recover faster!

Good attempt mate, he was just better 😂
Should have signed We Are Southern as a sponsor after that banner placement!
Look at all you beautiful startup ballers 😍
The Jordan Roo Jerseys 🦘
Thanks to Dunk.com.au for the quality jerseys! We have a few participants who registered late and said they’d like to get a jersey made so please use the feedback form in this email if you’re interested in buying one on a future reorder.
If you registered and didn’t play, we may still have your jersey (some walked off unfortunately…including one someone paid for - “SF Run Club” 😟) and can get it to you if you pay shipping and make a donation as we’ve decided to donate a % of the jersey costs to the Gadigal People in honor of their art and colour inspiration for the jerseys.

Commissioner Claude 🧠
In our 2024 March Madness Tournament, we manually allocated players to teams by self reported skill and height in an effort to create balanced teams….but that was only 70 players. This year we had 24 teams and 120 players with an average self reported skill rating of a 2.92 (on a 1-5 point scale) and average height of 180.12 cm so wanted to use the power of GenAI to help create equal teams.
Well, about 19 Claude chats and prompts (and many timeouts for too many tokens used) and we were able to create “mostly balanced” teams for skill and height and with the caveats that each team get a player taller than 187cm, 1 female player where possible, and max of 2 players with a “high skill rating” of 4 to 5.
The last team table before late drops and onsite subs is below. Just a bit of inside look into a) the use of GenAI to help craft the event, b) my unbiased efforts to not stack my team (I touched nada in the allocations and my own team was a 3 but below avg height…and I’m happy to have my Claude logs audited by sponsor Zed Law, and c) how data can help everyone have more fun and not get blown out on the court.
Only one team out of 24 went 4-0 in pool play, which was great to see! The only team to go 0-4 was via forfeit as late drops forced one empty team. Via la GenAI!

Yes we did output this to Excel.
Spotify Playlist 🎵
