March Madness Edition!

Three March hoop sessions in three cities and our May Tourney announcement before the buzzer beater!

Upcoming activity on the Bench

Hey Ballers,

If you read nothing else, know that our May Tourney for 120+ players is in Sydney on May 2 and you can reserve your slot for $5 here: https://lu.ma/qd1cqhk9

In the words of Shai LaBeouf,
Don’t let your dreams be dreams, yesterday you said tomorrow, so just do it!

Now for more stuff!

The only thing I love more than a mid range jumper is seeing so many of you bond and connect around our shared passions for Bball and startups. Did you know that we have one investor in our community that used Bball to connect with a board chair and the result was a 7 figure deal for one of their startups? Yeah, between boards and elbows, bid-ness happens!

I myself have had three founders connect with me on the court who later became customers of AWS. 🙂 Not why I do this but helps justify the time and effort from a bid-ness perspective!

What has started as a passion project has led to real connection and a desire to help others and we couldn’t be more thrilled to hear the stories of what you’re up to and where we can help. That’s why we do this and why we profile members in this newsletter. It’s the ultimate assist!

OK, enough of the warm fuzzies and on to more bid-ness.

MAY MADNESS TOURNEY: https://lu.ma/qd1cqhk9

In case you didn’t already click up above and save your slot for a measily $5’r, here’s more sizzle about the steak that is the tourney.

Folks, we are a go for the next tourney and it’s our biggest and baddest one yet! We did a March Madness event in 2024 and a Nov FinTech vs Startups session in Nov and both were 70 and 90 players respectively…May will be 120+.

And we’ll have reversible jerseys (assuming our sponsor asks come through) for all participants that can be used in the future to help eliminate the need for scrimmage bibs and bad “i don’t remember who is on my team” turnovers 😂

Hats off to the current partners who are already in and committing money to offset the costs of the courts, prizes, and food and drink afterward.

Community Wins 🏆️

We are always in movement - heres some more news from around the community.

MORE ABOUT MAY MADNESS…why not?

We would like to invite you to our second 4v4 STARTUP BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT in Sydney on Friday, May 2nd.

Startup founders, techies, investors, and ecosystem supporters are all welcome. We had 70 players last year and are expecting around 120 this year!

Last year we only charged a nominal fee but this year we expect rego to be around $30 -35 due to demand and as the event will include a "fully functional, high quality, and forever yours" reversible startup bball jersey for all registrants! It will also help us avoid having teams colour coordinate jerseys themselves.

Why May 2nd?

We’ve had a lot of great success with cross state and country (hello New Zealand…looking at you!) when we host the events right after or before a larger startup event and the Blackbird Sunrise Startup Conference is Apr 30-May 1. So, come to Sydney for the conference and party Thursday night until late if you’re not on my team! 🙂

Another one for the NBL?

And heres another interesting role aligned with a new deal the NBL has made with a ticketing tech startup, for anyone good with YIELD

Pain of trade or the Gain of trade?

We’re in two minds. Doncic is a maverick. Lakers was always the stacked team. The Real Madrid of the NBA, although not technically.

But this has been a conversation on two sides around the world - so heres a piece from the New Yorker, with a bit more of a specific stance.

A five year ticketing technology deal 🎟️

Will the NBL ever reach the glory that is NBA entertainment, down under?
This ticketing technology firm could be the next best step in getting there, freshly graduated from the recent AO Startups batch, and has been working with the NBL since 2021. This deal has already attracted more attention towards the NBL and hopefully more record breaking crowd numbers with each season in the term as well.

ADELAIDE CHAPTER LAUNCHED!

where else can you find smiles like this.

Just like we did for SXSW, Sunrise, and SomethingFest...we took the startup basketball train on the road for SOUTHSTART this week with a small but mighty group of five at the kickoff. This included Brisbane players Jacob and Sophie who both travelled in for the conference and first time baller and wellness advocate Troy Flower of Wellteam.me.

Thanks to local legend and two time founder Luke Howes for organising the venue and spreading the word! He’s keen to do more so we have high hopes for the new chapter!

Enough about old stuff….
